One of the most visited places in France, the Mont Saint-Michel welcomes approximately 3 million guests a year. With over one thousand years of history under its belt.
On the border of Brittany and Normandy sits le Mont Saint-Michel, a craggy island nestled in a sandy tidal floodplain. The breathtaking island is home to a charming medieval village. As of 2017, the island has a population of 30.
The island’s strategic location and formidable fortifications meant it remained unconquered during the Hundred Year’s War – an impressive feat!
This monastery is the breathtaking view from afar. On a misty day, it seems to float above the clouds. At high tide, the island is surrounded by water; at low tide, a pathway of sand leads to the village below.
Mont-Saint-Michel covers an area of only 7 ha (17 acres) in area, and the island's circumference covers some 960 m (3,150 ft) while its tallest point is 92 m (302 ft) above sea level.
Mayor of Mont-Saint-Michel is Jacques Bono (2020-26).
Tourism is almost the sole source of income of the commune. Tourism brings about $63 million into the small island. There are about fifty shops for 3 million tourists.
Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. There is a definite sense of loneliness or perhaps, peacefulness out here.
The whole place is a marvel of construction.
